The Buffalo Bills must slice their roster to 53 players ahead of the 2026 NFL regular season. Except head coach Joe Brady just revealed who won’t be on the chopping block despite struggling versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cornerback Maxwell Hairston is safe, even after the NFL Preseason struggles by the defender on Thursday.
Hairston emerged as the nearest cornerback on this Germie Bernard touchdown. But the former Kentucky CB dove for the ankles and showed poor tackling technique, which created the score.

Brady handed Hairston assurance he’s the CB2 on the defense following 28-27 victory.
“He’s our starting corner,” Brady told reporters after the game. “I thought it was good for him to come out, go through it, give a feel of the environment and for the game. That was the biggest reason for it [to let him play].”
Brady didn’t waiver from his confidence in Hairston.
“He’s exactly what we look for in a cornerback. He’s our guy,” Brady added.
Yet some fans believe that Davison Igbinosun is more deserving of a starting spot.
“Davison Igbinosun has been the better player than Maxwell Hairston this summer. Don’t think the Bills will give IGB the starting job, but I think they should,” said editor of the Bills themed “Shout!” Magazine Alex Brasky on the social media website X. formerly Twitter.
Hairston became one of the few 2025 starters who earned the start against the AFC North franchise. All while the others including quarterback Josh Allen sat this one out. Hairston settled for just one tackle on the evening.
Hairston did suffer a previous ankle injury in the season finale against the New York Jets. But looked healthy enough to perform for this contest.
