Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed enters the 2026 season with increased expectations after an offseason that reportedly addressed several areas of his game. Reed has become more accurate, developed a better presence and benefited from another year playing under head coach Mike Elko, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
The senior quarterback’s development comes after a 2025 season that included both major production and difficult late-game moments. Reed passed for 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns while completing 62% of his throws and adding six rushing touchdowns. However, he also threw a career-high 12 interceptions, including two in each of the Aggies two defeats.
Texas A&M began last season 11-0 before losing to rival Texas and then falling 10-3 to Miami in the College Football Playoff game. Reed had an opportunity to potentially tie the game with less than 30 seconds remaining, but an interception on third-and-goal from the 5-yard line ended the Aggies comeback chance. Rather than ignore the mistake, Reed has studied the play and focused on making better decisions in comparable situations.

His offseason work has included extensive film study, particularly involving protections and blitzes. Reed has also focused on becoming better at directing the offense, work that has caught Elko’s attention. He has additionally placed an emphasis on team chemistry while serving as a captain.
Reed said he can name every teammate he has played with during his four years at Texas A&M, and he spent the offseason organizing activities and trips for teammates. Skill-position players traveled with him to Florida, Dallas, Houston and his hometown of Nashville, where they combined workouts with time together. He also threw with teammates at D1 Training.
Reed will have several offensive weapons around him. Running backs Reuben Owens and Jamarion Morrow give the Aggies a two-player rushing combination, while Mario Craver returns after producing 917 receiving yards last season. Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, whom Reed has known since their high school days in Tennessee, also joins the receiving group.
There are major changes elsewhere on offense. Texas A&M returns only one starting offensive lineman from last season and has a first-year offensive coordinator in Holmon Wiggins, who took over after Collin Klein left for Kansas State.
Reed has stated that his goals are an SEC championship and a national title. With his previous production, greater experience and an offseason focused on limiting mistakes, his performance will be central to the Aggies’ hopes when Texas A&M open against Missouri State on Sept. 5.
