The Pittsburgh Steelers lost by a hair to the Buffalo Bills, 28-27, at Highmark Stadium on Thursday in their final assginment in the preseason. Steve Buechele found Dante Pettis for the game-winning touchdown, much to the delight of the home crowd and the disappointment of the Steelers.
Pittsburgh still had a chance to win, but Drew Allar’s pass to Lake McRee was incomplete on fourth-and-7 with 44 seconds remaining.
The Steelers finished at 1-2, while the Bills were unblemished at 3-0.

Led by Will Howard, the Steelers came out fighting. They outscored Buffalo, 14-3, in the first quarter to set the tempo. But the Bills stayed afloat, erasing a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
Despite their loss, Howard had a nice outing, throwing 9-of-15 for 69 yards and two touchdowns. He, however, had to be replaced by Allar in the second half due to a head injury.
“Will Howard was scheduled to speak with reporters after the game, but (he) was in the training room being evaluated for a head injury, per the team,” reported The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo on X.
DeFabo noted that the 24-year-old quarterback went to the medical staff during the game.
The head injury could not come at a worse time for Howard, who is battling Allar for the third-string job in Pittsburgh. Allar went 9-of-18 for 88 yards against the Bills.
For what it is worth, coach Mike McCarthy intimated that he is keen on keeping his four quarterbacks, including Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph, on the 53-man roster, so Howard’s spot should be safe even if he struggled in the preseason.
Howard is in his second year with the Steelers after being drafted in the sixth round in 2025.
