Local columnist predicts Spartans to reach bowl game this season

A local longtime columnist believes the Spartans will reach a bowl game in year one under new head coach Pat Fitzgerald.

Michigan State football is just one week away from kicking off the regular season, with their season-opener against Toledo scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on September 4. Lansing State Journal columnist Graham Couch has released his game-by-game predictions for the upcoming season, which includes a narrow win over the Rockets in the opener. But despite Couch predicting that game being closer than many Spartans would like, he believes Michigan State will hit bowl eligibility for the first time in five years this fall.

In his game-by-game predictions, Couch has Michigan State finishing the season with a 6-6 record and beating LSU in the Music City Bowl to cap the year with a 7-6 mark. You'll need to read the full story to see how Couch sees this season playing out on a week-to-week basis, but I'll let you know that Michigan State needed to beat Rutgers in the season finale to earn a bowl bid. That was something they were unable to do against the Scarlet Knights just two years ago in the season-finale.

Like Couch, I also released my preseason game-by-game predictions, and like Couch I have the Spartans going 6-6 in the regular season. I just have a different bowl game destination projected for Michigan State than Couch.

Michigan State last reached a bowl game in 2021 when they went 11-2 and finished the year with a Peach Bowl victory over Pitt.
