Kayshon Boutte Trade Breakdown: Who Won The Patriots-Texans Deal?

The Kayshon Boutte trade, first reported by Tom Pelissero, is a trade that makes sense for both sides. Boutte was traded to the Houston Texans from the New England Patriots in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 7th-round pick. The Patriots received a young safety who could become a key piece to the defense in the future, while the Texans, currently with a thin wide receiver room after Jayden Higgins suffered a torn ACL, received a young, promising wide receiver who, thanks to their current cap space situation, is extendable. However, which team got the better of the deal?
Why The Patriots Made This Trade
The New England Patriots made a couple of splash moves this offseason with the free agency signing of Romeo Doubs, and trading their 2027 first-round pick to the Eagles for Brown. They course corrected hard to make sure wide receiver wasn’t a glaring need like last year. However, it meant someone on the receiving corps was expendable, even after the release of Stefon Diggs. Mack Hollins spot was considerably safe, so it really came down to Boutte, Demario Douglas and Efton Chism III. Boutte was also a free agent after this year, and after the aforementioned offseason moves, it’s highly unlikely the Pats would’ve signed him back depending on the price tag.
To be frank, the Patriots safety room lacks proven depth outside of Craig Woodson and recent free agency signing Kevin Byard. Reed played in seven games last season, notching 14 tackles and a fumble recovery. Reed provides more value as a box safety, which the Patriots love utilizing. Look no further than Jaylinn Hawkins last year, and Julius Peppers before him. Since Byard’s only on a one-year contract, Reed can step in next year and become a starter if he’s ready.

Why The Kayshon Boutte Trade Makes Sense For The Texans
The Texans receiving corps currently consists of Nico Collins and a lot of question marks, especially after Jayden Higgins suffered a torn ACL and will be out for the season. Boutte at least provides an experienced hand to put less pressure on guys like Xavier Hutchinson and Jaylin Noel to perform, not to mention Tank Dell, despite his long-awaited return, is also a major question mark.
Boutte was fifth in the entire NFL in yards per catch last season (16.7), so he provides a big play threat alongside Collins. The Texans can also use this year as a litmus test for whether or not Boutte warrants an extension with the team, thanks to them having enough cap space flexibility to consider an extension.
Reed was expendable for the Texans as well. Considering the free agency signing of Reed Blankenship to a three-year, $24.75 million contract, along with already having Calen Bullock, Houston gave up a player that wasn’t considered a vital piece of their team in Reed.

The Kayshon Boutte trade felt like a matter of time, as unfortunate as it sounds. The Texans won this trade, but the Patriots. They got someone in Boutte who, not only fits an immediate need, but can slot in as the future number two wide receiver who they can extend thanks to their surplus of cap space. They did that without having to give up an important player to their future. However, it made sense for the Patriots to cut bait while they could still get something in return for him, and they got a young, moldable safety who has potential to become a starting caliber safety in the NFL.
