The Denver Broncos' third and final preseason game is a big one for many players on the roster. It will be their final time to make an impression on coaches after weeks of training camp and offseason work.
Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton knows how it is to battle through these conditions, having put in the work and trusted his performances. Sutton gave a message of hope to the players who are on the bubble going into Sunday's final roster cutdown.
"The mentality has been the same since OTAs, since (players) got in during OTAs and they got in at the start of training camp," Sutton said on Wednesday. "Every day is an opportunity to go out there and put something good on film, whether it’s practice, whether it’s the walkthrough, whether it’s the meetings and then ultimately these preseason games."
The offseason work will show up, if not with the Broncos, then somewhere else around the league. Players who have been low on the depth chart rose to the final roster, and eventually to the starting lineup. A famous Broncos example of this mentality comes by way of Terrell Davis. One tackle in a preseason game changed the trajectory of his Hall of Fame career. Those moments will stand out on tape.
"Coach [Sean Payton] says it a lot and he echoes it a lot, that you are not only auditioning for the Denver Broncos," Sutton said. "You’re auditioning for 31 other teams. You literally never know when an opportunity will arise… If you go out there and don’t work, coach always says, ‘Don’t worry about the room. Don’t count the numbers in the room. Don’t worry about that part of it [because] everything will shake out how it’s supposed to shake out. If you’re putting good stuff on film, people will come asking about you, whether it’s here or somewhere else.’"
The Broncos' final preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings kicks off on Friday night. Whatever happens, Sutton believes that everything will work out for players who put in the work.
"It’s all about making sure you be where your feet are, putting your best foot forward in your respective position and letting the chips fall how they fall," Sutton said. "God’s plan is bigger than anything, so you never know where you are going to wind up being. You need to have a lot of faith and trust.”
The Broncos' 53-man roster will need to be trimmed from 91 to 53 by 4:00 pm MST on Sunday, Aug. 30.
