There is plenty of excitement surrounding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' revamped roster entering the 2026 season, but there is also significant pressure for the organization to prove its current core can still contend. Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon recently rated the anxiety level of every NFL fanbase heading into the season, and Tampa Bay received a panic meter of 9 out of 10, tied for one of the highest marks in the league.

The reasoning centers on how important this season could be for the franchise's future. After winning three consecutive NFC South titles, the Buccaneers finished 8-9 last season and missed the playoffs for the first time under Todd Bowles. Bleacher Report described 2026 as essentially a "do or die" season for those who believe Bowles and Baker Mayfield can still lead another run.

Mayfield is entering the final year of his contract after a 2025 season that started with MVP-level play before injuries contributed to a second-half decline. Bowles is also under pressure after Tampa Bay's defense finished 20th in points allowed and 19th in yards allowed last season, dropping from 6-2 to 8-9. The Buccaneers also said goodbye to two franchise cornerstones this offseason. Mike Evans departed in free agency, while Lavonte David retired, leaving Tampa Bay attempting to replace two players who helped define the organization for more than a decade.

But that doesn't mean the sky is falling. Tampa Bay added Rueben Bain Jr. to a rebuilt defensive front, drafted Josiah Trotter Jr and signed Alex Anzalone to help at linebacker. They revamped their front seven with A'Shawn Robinson, Rakeem Nunez-Roches, and Al-Quadin Muhammad, while David Walker has returned from a torn ACL looking unblockable. They have an offense featuring Mayfield, Chris Godwin Jr, Emeka Egbuka, and in the backfield, paired Bucky Irving with Kenny Gainwell. Bleacher Report recently ranked the Bucs 16th in its preseason power rankings, suggesting this is still viewed as a competitive roster despite the uncertainty surrounding its future.

The bottom line? The Buccaneers must return to their NFC South Championship ways and make a deep run. For Mayfield, it defines his next contract and future with the team. For Bowles, it could define if he keeps his place as head coach. For the team, it could be the difference between tipping toward a rebuild or building something special.
