Sam Howell Ready For Final Cowboys Chance As Roster Cuts Loom

Sam Howell has been locked in a quarterback battle with Joe Milton, and the Dallas Cowboys' final preseason game could determine the winner.

The battle has gone back and forth all offseason with the pair going toe-to-toe in a competition that Milton has called "fun," but now the time has come when the rubber meets the road.

Dallas' final preseason game tonight at home against the New Orleans Saints could determine who is Dak Prescott's backup for 2026, and who is likely to be cut and maybe find their way back onto the practice squad.

Howell has had the only big mistake of note, the red zone interception against the Arizona Cardinals; otherwise, he's had a good offseason.

Going a combined 15 of 22 for 159 yards, 1 TD, and an interception isn't a bad stat line; the problem is Milton has just been better.

But Sam knows what he's done this offseason, and he's looking forward to putting on a show against the Saints.

"It's been good," Howell said. "I feel like I've gotten better every
single day, I feel like I'm in a good place with offense, it's been
good to get a bunch of reps. Feel like I'm in a good place with the
system, and I feel like I put together a good camp.

"We got one more
opportunity [vs. Saints], so it'll be fun to get out there and play with the guys."

With the Cowboys needing to make a decision on several roster spots, the big question is how many quarterbacks will the franchise keep?

If it were my decision, I'd keep Joe and cut Sam, with the idea that he'd return to the practice squad.

The game against the Saints is the last chance for Howell to show the coaching staff what he's got, and even head coach Brian Schottenheimer has been big in his praise of Sam and has repeatedly stated the battle isn't over.

With both quarterbacks set to feature against the Saints, it is a battle that will go down to the wire, and it is clear Sam is happy with the work he's done this offseason.

Time will tell if it is enough to usurp Joe for the QB2 role.
