The debut in the NFL was hard for Max Iheanachor; he is not treating it as a failure.
Not having participated in the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ first two preseason games, Iheanachor got his chance to show off against the Buffalo Bills. The debut was accompanied by blunders such as being sacked once and committing a holding foul; nevertheless, the first-round draft pick did not try to hide it but rather accepted it as part of his game.

The debut of Iheanachor was delayed due to an injury, and as a result, he only had two practice sessions before his debut at Pittsburgh Steelers. As a consequence, the debut became particularly hard for Iheanachor, who confessed that things went not as planned.
Nevertheless, the rookie did not wish to blame anything for the poor game but confessed that the debut was very exciting for him, as he could finally play with his teammates.
“I thought it was fun, going out there with the guys, being back, only had two practices. Stuff didn’t go as planned out there, but you know, just got to learn from it and prepare better for the next game, or when my next opportunity comes.”

His response matters because the Steelers need to determine how quickly their first-round tackle can grow into the right tackle competition. The rookie had flashed during training camp before his injury, even holding his own against several of the Steelers’ top pass rushers.
Against the Bills, though, the speed of an actual NFL game exposed the work still ahead. Iheanachor surrendered a sack early after an overly aggressive set, an issue Mike McCarthy later explained. He was also flagged for holding, although the penalty appeared questionable on replay. The encouraging part was what happened afterward: the rookie settled down and played better as the game progressed.
That matched Troy Fautanu’s assessment from the sideline. The Steelers’ tackle acknowledged there would naturally be jitters in Iheanachor’s first game, but said the rookie began settling in and playing better.
For Iheanachor, that progression is more important than pretending the debut was flawless.
He also knows exactly where the work begins. The rookie previously said he needs to refine essentially everything, from his footwork to both run and pass blocking. Now he has real NFL tape to learn from.
That could prove valuable in a right tackle battle that remains unsettled. Dylan Cook currently has the inside track, while Broderick Jones could also factor into the equation. Iheanachor’s limited preseason exposure means he has less margin for error, but his physical upside keeps him firmly in the conversation.
The rookie’s latest message suggests he understands that. Rather than dwelling on the mistakes, Iheanachor is focused on the next rep. And for a young offensive lineman, that might be the most important lesson from his first NFL action.
