Ohio State heads into Michigan week with questions about the status of wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate.
“The only thing I’ll say really is that they’re day-to-day,” coach Ryan Day said after a 42-9 win over Rutgers in which both OSU’s two leading pass catchers sat out.
Tate has missed three straight games. Smith has been sitting out since late in the first half of last week’s win over UCLA. Ohio State’s policy is to refrain from sharing specifics about injuries.
“The staff and those guys are working really hard to get ready to play next week,” Day said.
Without Smith and Tate, tight end Max Klare stepped up for the Buckeyes with a season-high seven catches,105 yards and a touchdown. Senior David Adolph, a Dublin Jerome grad who walked on at Ohio State in 2022, made his first career start and had two catches for 23 yards. Brandon Inniss’ two catches included a beautiful grab in the back right corner of the South end zone at Ohio Stadium.
The running game posted its highest total in a Big Ten game yet this season with 254 yards. Bo Jackson handled the bulk of the carries with 110 yards on 19 rushes. He had two touchdowns while CJ Donaldson and James Peoples also rushed for scores.
“Nobody really flinched,” Day said. “Everyone’s kind of like, ‘Come on. Let’s go play.’ And that’s been the approach of this team and this coaching staff. So, it’ll be the same way this week, and those guys have got to fight like heck to get back on the field.”
