Thursday's Game Solidified Key Buffalo Bills Positional Battle

One of the key starting jobs on the Buffalo Bills roster seems to have been settled after the team's 28-27 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. 

While many were paying attention to the team's defensive backfield and the bottom-of-the-roster players fighting for their spot, one important starting role was still up for grabs. 

Heading into the final preseason game, Buffalo's starting punter job still had some questions. While many felt that rookie Tommy Doman Jr. was leading the battle against veteran Mitch Wishnowsky, Thursday's game likely put any questions to bed.

Wishnowsky had his worst performance of the preseason at the worst possible time. His first punt hung in the air for just 3.81 seconds. The second, not only did it hang just 3.09 seconds, but it also went just 19 yards and hit a sideline official square in the head. 

Doman Jr., on the other hand, held the ball on Tyler Bass's field goal, handled kickoffs off scores, and had two punts end inside the 20. His first three punts went an averaged of over 54 yards. The only blemish for the rookie out of Florida came on his fourth kick. 

Punting from the endzone, Doman's kick was caught around the Buffalo 44. It was then returned for a Steelers touchdown after multiple missed tackles by the Bills special teamers.

Overall, Doman Jr. finished the preseason with seven punts. He averaged 48.1 yards per punt, with a long of 59. He also placed four punts inside the 20, which was tied for second among NFL punters in the preseason, and had two at the 10.

After the Bills spent a draft pick on the soon-to-be 24-year-old in April, it was also anticipated he'd start the year as the team's punter. His impressive preseason performance just made the decision easier for Buffalo's coaching staff and general manager Brandon Beane.
