UNC football's three keys to victory vs. TCU

North Carolina’s trip across the Atlantic will provide an immediate measuring stick for a Tar Heels team looking to start the 2026 season on the right foot.

TCU presents a difficult opening challenge Saturday in Dublin, with the Horned Frogs bringing a combination of experience, transfer-portal additions and returning production into the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. For UNC, navigating that challenge will require execution on both sides of the ball, particularly as several new pieces settle into expanded roles.

The Tar Heels will have opportunities to dictate the matchup, but taking advantage of them could determine whether they return from Ireland with a season-opening victory. Here are three keys for North Carolina against TCU.

Pressure TCU quarterback

Dynamic quarterback Jaden Craig requires constant pressure. Fortunately for UNC, it fielded one of the best pass-rush defenses last year.

Abou-Jaoude headlines the Tar Heels' defensive front Saturday, coming off a 2026 campaign with 12 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. Anchored by Leroy Jackson, Isaiah Johnson and Penn State transfer Jaylen Harvey, North Carolina must disrupt Craig in his first Power Four start. Consistent backfield pressure is vital.

Establish the ground attack

Led by sophomore Demon June, the running game remains North Carolina’s primary offensive focus. With the return of June and Benjamin Hall, the Tar Heels aim to exploit a TCU defense rebuilding after losing several 2025 starters. Success on the ground will alleviate pressure on the passing attack.

Protect Billy Edwards

The offensive line faces a critical test after an injury-plagued 2025 season. While center Christo Kelly, left guard Aidan Banfield and left tackle Jordan Hall return, the unit's right side features new transfers.

The performance of projected right-side starters Andrew Threatt and Jacqawn McRoy will be pivotal in protecting quarterback Billy Edwards and sustaining passing efficiency Saturday.
