Trent Dilfer gets first win in second stint as head coach of Lipscomb Academy (Tenn.)

After opening its 2026 season with a tough loss, Lipscomb Academy (Tenn.) got back on the horse and picked up a nice 16-6 road victory over Ravenwood on Friday night. It’s the first win of the year for returning Mustangs head coach Trent Dilfer.

The former Super Bowl-winning quarterback opted to return to the high school ranks after his tumultuous stint as the head coach at UAB. Lipscomb brought Dilfer back in January. He had a great first stint in charge, going 44-10 with three straight conference titles from 2020-22.

Lipscomb carried a 10-0 lead into halftime at Ravenwood. Kicker Tyson Robbins nailed three field goals from 39, 42 and 42 yards in the win. The Mustangs didn’t allow a score until the fourth quarter and held strong to improve to 1-1 on the season. They lost 27-24 at McCallie to open the campaign last week.

The Mustangs brought in multiple notable transfers heading into this season, including a pair of quarterbacks. Dilfer also brought former UAB linebackers coach Matthew Wright in to be the new defensive coordinator.

After Dilfer left Lipscomb Academy for UAB, the Mustangs saw their winning ways begin to go downhill as they have gone 12-20 from 2023-25, finishing below the .500 mark each season. In each of Dilfer’s four seasons leading the Mustangs, the team never fell below the .500 mark, with the former NFL’er’s worst season being his first in 2019 when the team went 7-6.

The Mustangs entered this week as the No. 15 team in Tennessee, according to the Rivals Composite Rankings. They now gear up for their home-opener and another big matchup vs. Knoxville Catholic next week on Sept. 4.
