Michigan commit Quentin Burrell helps deliver one of football's craziest comebacks

Michigan fans: it might be time to start tuning in to Mount Carmel (IL) football.

Four-star 2027 wide receiver and Wolverine commit Quentin Burrell had a night on Friday, Aug. 28, hauling in three consequential touchdowns in Mount Carmel’s stunning 48-44 victory over St. Joseph Regional (NJ) after trailing by 30 in the first quarter.

One could argue that Burrell’s first grab of the night was the momentum-turner. A one-handed catch pulled in from the back corner of the end zone brought Mount Carmel up to a much more hopeful 30-14 deficit in the second quarter, flipping the atmosphere in Chicago. 

A short receiving TD for Burrell in the third quarter got the Caravan within shooting distance at 37-35, before he circled right back to the one to deliver the final blow: a 40-yd TD catch on fourth-and-8 to give Mount Carmel their first (and final) lead of the night. 

On the other end of those balls, Mount Carmel QB Brady Cloherty was the one firing off a wild seven touchdown passes, doing his part to finalize a stat line that doubles those of many of Friday night’s other high school football blockbusters.

It’s hard to say this so early in the season, but this matchup with St. Joseph Regional almost felt like a must-win for Mount Carmel – after a shockingly brutal 42-23 upset to East St. Louis (IL) last Saturday, the Caravan needed a strong showing to keep their national spotlight. Friday night’s victory will do quite nicely. 

Burrell, Cloherty and the rest of the Caravan will be back in action against Nazareth Academy (IL) next Friday.
