Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. left the team’s preseason finale against the Minnesota Vikings on Friday night after suffering a right foot injury during the opening series. Mims was one of the few Denver regulars in uniform, but his night ended after only six plays from scrimmage.
The injury occurred on a third-down play when Mims went up for an overthrown pass from quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Mims and Vikings safety Jacob Thomas collided out of bounds as the ball went past the wide receiver. He immediately grabbed his right foot after hitting the ground and rolled over before getting back up.
Mims initially tried to jog toward the sideline but was visibly limping. Team medical personnel accompanied him, and he threw his helmet down in frustration before sitting near the Broncos’ bench. He was then examined inside the team’s blue medical tent and subsequently headed to the locker room. Denver officially listed him as questionable to return.

The fourth-year wide receiver had already missed the Broncos’ first two preseason contests after suffering a soft-tissue injury during training camp. He had also missed several practices because of a lower-body issue and entered Friday without recording a catch or return during the preseason.
Mims was selected by Denver in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft and has since become a standout return specialist. He earned Pro Bowl recognition in each of his first two seasons and was named a first-team All-Pro as a returner in 2024. He also became only the second player in Broncos history, alongside Von Miller, to earn Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors during his first two seasons.
Last season, Mims ranked second in the NFL with a 15.6-yard average on punt returns and found the end zone on a punt return during Denver’s Week 14 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
His offensive production became especially important during last season’s playoff run. Injuries to Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant created additional opportunities, and Mims responded with a crucial touchdown during the Broncos’ 33-30 overtime divisional-round victory over the Buffalo Bills. He also made crucial plays against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game and finished the postseason as Denver’s leading receiver.
Mims is entering the final year of his rookie contract, with no extension completed yet. The extent of his latest foot injury could therefore become another factor in his situation.
The Broncos also have undrafted return options in Kolbe Katsis, Cameron Ross and Sean Fresch Jr. should Mims miss time.
