Kirby Smart makes his stance on recruiting from NFL rosters clear

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart made his stance clear when it comes to recruiting players on NFL rosters. Smart and Georgia aren't looking to add any players that have signed NFL contracts, unlike other college football programs like the LSU Tigers.

"We're not currently evaluating anybody that are on NFL rosters," Smart said. "My thought is just to each his own. I'm worried about our team, our organization, how we do things.

The opportunities presented to the guys on our team are important to me. They've earned those opportunities through an offseason, through a summer program, through a really tough fall camp. You have to decide, each and every person, if that's valuable enough to warrant replacing your players that have worked with your team with others."

The SEC and other Power Four conferences have fought back with harsh consequences for players that are trying to return after signing professional contracts or declaring for the draft.

"They might be better, so our job is to upgrade and try to get better as much as we can and win games," Smart continued. "If some people feel like that gives them an opportunity to be better and doesn't change their culture, then more power to them. This thing is tough."

Smart shared that his a fan of the five-for-five model, which is starting this season. He noted how over the years the redshirt rule changed to add more games after not allowing players to play a single play without losing their redshirt.

"Five-for-five is a better rule," Smart said. "You can play as much or as little, and you get five years. It's affecting different people in different ways."

The temporary restraining orders allowing players to return will clash with new conference policies over upcoming days as players try to fight for eligibility while conferences have strict new rules preventing this.
