Stanford Suffers Major Offensive Line Loss Before Season Opener Against Hawaii

Stanford will begin the Tavita Pritchard era without one of the most important players on its offense.

Starting left tackle Niki Prongos will miss Saturday’s season opener against Hawaii because of an undisclosed issue, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

“Sources: Stanford will be without starting left tackle Niki Prongos (undisclosed) against Hawaii today,” Thamel reported on X. “Prongos, a redshirt senior, started all 12 games at left tackle for the Cardinal last year, the only Stanford lineman to start every game at one spot.”

The timing couldn’t be much worse for Stanford.

The Cardinal are breaking in a new head coach and starting quarterback, and Prongos was supposed to provide stability at one of the most important positions on the field.

Instead, former Michigan quarterback Davis Warren will make his Stanford debut without his starting blindside protector.

Niki Prongos Became Stanford’s Most Reliable Offensive Lineman

Prongos emerged as a fixture on Stanford’s offensive line during the 2025 season.

The 6-foot-7, 310-pound tackle started all 12 games at left tackle and was the only Cardinal offensive lineman to start every game at the same position.

His performance went beyond simply being available.

Prongos earned a 75.4 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, the best mark among qualifying Stanford offensive linemen and fourth-best among starting left tackles in the ACC.

That production made Prongos one of the players Stanford could reasonably build around entering Pritchard’s first season.

He even received fourth-team preseason All-ACC recognition from Phil Steele.

Prongos decided to return to Stanford rather than pursue the NFL after last season, saying during spring practice that he believed he still had room to improve.

“There is a lot left on the table and a lot I can get better at before I pursue the NFL,” Prongos said.

His absence now creates an immediate challenge for an offensive line that was expected to be a potential strength.

Davis Warren Loses His Blindside Protector

Prongos’ absence becomes even more significant because of the quarterback standing behind Stanford’s offensive line.

Warren was named Stanford’s starter during the final week of training camp after transferring from Michigan.

The sixth-year quarterback started nine games for the Wolverines in 2024 and threw for 1,199 yards and seven touchdowns. He missed the entire 2025 season while recovering from a torn ACL.

Saturday was already going to represent a fresh start for Warren.

Now he’ll make that start with Stanford needing to shuffle its protection plan against a Hawaii defense that caused the Cardinal problems last season.

Stanford managed only 109 passing yards in its 23-20 loss to Hawaii in Honolulu last August. Prongos started that game at left tackle.

Stanford Looks for Revenge Against Hawaii

Saturday’s matchup also begins a new chapter for Stanford.

Pritchard makes his head-coaching debut as the Cardinal attempt to climb out of a lengthy stretch of losing seasons. Stanford finished 4-8 in 2025 but went 4-2 at Stanford Stadium, its best home record since 2018.

Hawaii enters with considerably more momentum.

The Rainbow Warriors went 9-4 last season, their highest win total since 2019, and defeated California in the Hawaii Bowl. They also beat Stanford on a field goal as time expired in last year’s season opener.

Hawaii won’t be at full strength either.

Leading receiver Pofele Ashlock has been ruled out because of a knee injury after catching 76 passes for 827 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

That means both teams will enter Saturday without one of their most established offensive players.

For Stanford, however, Prongos’ absence creates an especially important question.

Warren was brought in to help revitalize an offense that struggled badly in 2025. His first opportunity to do it will come without the man Stanford expected to protect his blindside.

Stanford and Hawaii kick off Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at Stanford Stadium. The game will air nationally on ACC Network.
