College football is officially underway with East Texas A&M facing Mercer on ESPN on Saturday night.

Mercer is hoping to begin this season better than how it finished the 2025 season. It lost its last two games of the season, including a 47-0 blowout loss to South Dakota in the FCS playoffs. Even with those two losses, the Bears finished the year 9-3 with a perfect 8-0 conference record. Two of those losses came at home.
Saturday’s game will mark the first one as head coach of the Bears for Joel Taylor. Coming over from West Georgia, a large number of his players followed him to Mercer. Taylor took over a losing program and guided the Wolves to an 8-3 record last season.
On the other end of the spectrum is East Texas A&M, which had a disappointing season with a 3-9 record and 3-5 mark in conference play. East Texas A&M returns quarterback Eric Rodriguez and running back EJ Oakmon.
This marks the first time that Mercer and East Texas A&M have squared off.
