ESPN's Computer Releases New Top 25 Rankings After Week 0

ESPN’s computer model, the Football Power Index, has updated its Top 25 rankings following the Week 0 games.

Week 0 of the 2026 college football regular season didn’t feature a ton of excitement. North Carolina got a big win, taking down TCU overseas. Meanwhile, USC won in blowout fashion, while Florida State got a victory, as well.

Heading into Week 1 of the 2026 college football regular season, ESPN’s computer model, the Football Power Index, has released its new Top 25 rankings. The FPI is a projection-based model that updates daily.

How does ESPN’s FPI work?

ESPN’s computer model is a projection-based system that updates daily and is meant to project how good a team will be the rest of the season.

“The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily. FPI data from seasons prior to 2019 may not be complete,” the FPI writes.

The official new college football Top 25 polls will come out the first day after Week 1 of the 2026 college football regular season ends.
