Where Michigan Football stands on ESPN’s FPI heading into Week 1

We have made it to football season, and later this week, there will be regular-season action at Michigan Stadium.

The Wolverines are in an interesting spot with so much offseason turnover, and ESPN’s Football Power Index is not thrilled with their outlook, projecting 7.8 wins to 4.3 losses for a team with a 15.9 rating, ranking 14th nationally.

The FPI does give Michigan a 23.3% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff — largely considered a ceiling goal for first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham and co. However, deterring those efforts is a schedule that includes No. 1 Ohio State (28.7 FPI), No. 4 Oregon (25.3), No. 6 Indiana (23.1) and No. 12 Oklahoma (17.8).

The FPI is confident the Wolverines will hit the six-win mark (89.6% likelihood), but those Big Ten (4.1%) and National Champions (1.4%) odds remain low.
