Last Saturday, USC began the season with a 42-26 win over San Jose State University. The game was played at the famed Los Angeles Coliseum. However, the Coliseum was virtually empty.

On Monday, USC released a statement explaining the lack of attendance.

“ We thank our fans who showed up Saturday and look forward to seeing increased attendance the rest of the season” the statement via USA Today said in part.

Extremely hot weather also contributed to the low attendance. However, longtime college football analyst Paul Finebaum isn’t buying it, per ESPN/Awful Announcing. He accuses the university of using AI to issue a statement he thinks doesn’t reflect the university’s true feelings.

“There is no way a human being at Southern Cal put out that pile of garbage,” Finebaum said. “That had to be AI generated. Because no sane person at the University of Southern California would say that”

USC has played at the Coliseum for over 100 years. The first game played there was on Oct. 6, 1923. Since then, the Coliseum has witnessed some of the greatest moments in USC football history.

In 1967, the nation watched USC vs UCLA to determine a trip to the Rose Bowl. The Trojans, led by O.J. Simpson, defeated Gary Beban and the Bruins 21-20.

The Coliseum also hosted the “Bush Push” of 2005 when Reggie Bush pushed Matt Leinart across the goal line for a 34-31 win over Notre Dame.

It also hosted the Rams, Dodgers, concerts, Olympic events, etc over the years.

USC will play against Fresno State at the Coliseum on Friday, Sept. 4 at 6:00 pm PST.
