Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer has officially named Alex Asparuhov the program's starting punter.
One of Alabama's final starting competitions left to be decided, DeBoer made the announcement Monday afternoon during his Week 1 press conference, stating that Asparuhov had won the job. Asparuhov won the starting job during fall camp, beating out North Alabama transfer Adam Watford.
"We'll have Alex Asparuhov be our punter," DeBoer said.
Asparuhov is entering his second season in Tuscaloosa after serving as the Crimson Tide's backup a year ago. The sophomore, who was a member of the Crimson Tide's 2025 recruiting class, appeared in one game last fall behind starter Blake Doud, but did not record any stats.
Coming out of high school, Asparuhov was rated as the nation's No. 12 punter in the 2025 class, per the 247Sports composite rankings. Asparuhov was also considered a three-star recruit out of San Joaquin Memorial High School in California.
Alabama's 2026 season is set to open this upcoming Saturday, Sept. 5, at home against East Carolina. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT on ABC.
