Mike Elko Ends the Hype as Texas A&M Opens Against Missouri State

Texas A&M football spent an offseason hearing about playoff expectations, NFL departures and the brutal road awaiting it in the SEC. Mike Elko is ready to shut down the conversation.
“It’s finally game week,” Elko said Monday. “Finally, we get to stop talking.”

No. 8 Texas A&M opens its 2026 season against Missouri State at 6 p.m. Saturday at Kyle Field.
The Aggies are coming off an 11-2 campaign that included their first 11-0 start since 1992 and the program’s first College Football Playoff appearance.
Repeating that breakthrough won’t be simple. Texas A&M lost 10 players in the 2026 NFL Draft, tying the school record and setting a program high for the seven-round era.
The SEC has also moved to a nine-game conference schedule, adding another potential land mine to an already punishing slate.
Before any of that matters, the Aggies must avoid tripping over Missouri State.
The Bears went 7-6 and finished 5-3 in Conference USA during their first FBS season. They also reached the inaugural Xbox Bowl, losing 34-28 to Arkansas State.
Elko isn’t treating them like a decorative opening-week opponent.
“They’re making tremendous investments in their program,” Elko said. “They’re definitely here for the long haul.”
Texas A&M’s biggest preseason question remains its rebuilt offensive line. Four Aggies linemen were drafted, and Elko acknowledged that the staff is “still searching for what the best five is.”
Competition at guard remains unresolved, with multiple players expected to receive opportunities.
Quarterback Marcel Reed provides some continuity. The junior threw for 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season while adding 493 rushing yards and six scores.
His next assignment is less about producing a viral highlight than consistently controlling the offense.
“What Marcel has to do is go out there and play consistently on Saturdays,” Elko said.
Defensively, linebacker Daymion Sanford is expected to play, although Elko described him as a possible game-time decision.
Julio Humphrey has earned a starting job in the secondary after impressing the staff with his consistency throughout the offseason.
Elko believes the Aggies possess a “very, very high ceiling.” He also knows preseason potential is college football’s cheapest currency.

Texas A&M has bigger goals than beating Missouri State. It has playoff ambitions, an SEC title chase and unfinished business after scoring only three points in its postseason loss to Miami.
Saturday is where the sales pitch ends. The Aggies finally have to prove it.
