The Lane Kiffin era at LSU officially begins Saturday, and expectations are already sky-high.

The Tigers open the 2026 college football season at home against Clemson, giving Kiffin an immediate chance to show whether the hype surrounding his arrival and LSU’s offseason spending can translate into results on the field.

Former Broncos QB Calls on LSU’s Lane Kiffin to Deliver the Goods

Kiffin wasted little time reshaping the LSU roster after taking over in Baton Rouge. The Tigers put together the No. 1 transfer portal class in the country, backed by an estimated $40 million-plus roster payroll.

At quarterback, LSU landed Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt, a highly regarded player who was ranked No. 1 overall in the transfer portal. The Tigers also addressed the offensive line by adding Jordan Seaton and Aliou Bah.

Kiffin made more headlines late in the offseason by adding players with recent NFL training camp experience. Among them were tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who spent time with the Cleveland Browns, and defensive lineman Junior Tuihalamaka (formerly of Notre Dame).

All of that has created plenty of buzz around LSU. Now, former Broncos quarterback Ben DiNucci wants to see the Tigers back it up.

“I wanna see this LSU team and Lane Kiffin put their money where their mouth is… When’s the last time we saw LSU dominate somebody? I want them to come out, look the part, feel the part, and if they’re gonna talk the talk, it’s time to start walking the walk,” DiNucci said on CBS Sports.

DiNucci also pointed to LSU’s preseason ranking and said Saturday night will put plenty of attention on Kiffin, Leavitt, and the new-look offense.

“I wanna see it Saturday night, and I wanna feel it Saturday night. I want them to go out, put a physical, dominating performance against Clemson, and make no doubt that this LSU team under Lane Kiffin is gonna be different than it’s been in the years past,” he added.

LSU Has Plenty to Prove

The demand for a strong opening statement comes after a disappointing 2025 campaign.

LSU finished 7-6 overall and 3-5 in SEC play, leaving the Tigers nowhere near the 12-team College Football Playoff. Their season ended with a 38-35 loss to Houston in the Texas Bowl.

The struggles eventually cost Brian Kelly his job as LSU fired Kelly during the season before turning to Kiffin, who arrived in Baton Rouge after taking Ole Miss to the College Football Playoff in 2025.

The Clemson game is a major early test for Kiffin after LSU’s massive offseason rebuild. A convincing win would show that the Tigers’ talent, spending, and hype can translate into results.

As DiNucci suggested, Saturday gives LSU its first chance to prove that the new-look program is truly different.
