HIGH POINT – High Point Christian crossed off the final opponent standing in its way of a perfect season.

The top-seeded Cougars scored on the third play from scrimmage – sparking a run of 21 straight points to open the game – and shut down second-seeded Asheville School 50-13 in the NCISAA Division II football championship Friday at the High Point Athletic Complex.

With the win, HPCA completed a 12-0 season – the program's first – and captured its third state title after winning back-to-back in 2015 and 2016.

"You can only dream of finishing a perfect season," Cougars coach Ryan Rocha said. "I've done this for 17 years. It's always the goal and there's so much hard work that goes in, sacrificing time from the family.

"The quote I live by is: I want to send my seniors out by them turning their pads in after a win. And that can only happen if you win a state championship – or if you go 1-9, and we don't want to do that," he said with a smile.

"That feeling is surreal. The senior class – some of them have been here since their freshman year – has gradually seen the transformation. I just can't describe the joy inside my heart that they finished the race strong."

Jaylen Moore ran 34 times for 366 yards – a single-game school record – and six touchdowns to lead HPCA, which accumulated 469 yards of total offense – all on the ground (it only threw one pass). Amsterdam Knock added four carries for 83 yards, while Hez Krider chipped in six carries for 50 yards and a touchdown.

"It's a dream come true," said Moore, a senior running back. "We've been working since the start of the year – we started in January. We had a lot of people leave, and people doubted us. People thought we weren't going to win, but we came back this year. We really put on the grind. Everybody showed up."

Moore took the third play from scrimmage 75 yards less than a minute into the game. He added a 21-yard score late in the quarter and scored again on a 10-yard run early in the second to give the Cougars a 21-0 lead. He tacked on a 19-yard run inside the final minute to give HPCA a 27-7 advantage into halftime.

"It was the best feeling," Moore said of the team's start. "I would do anything for my team. I wanted to win for these guys. I knew the start of the year was a little shaky for us, but I know everybody needed it. I've been working hard all year for this, so I just put my head down."

Moore broke free in the third for a 67-yard touchdown and scored again on a 37-yard run later in the quarter to give the Cougars a 43-7 lead. Krider scored the final touchdown of the game inside the final two minutes as HPCA – which outscored its opponents 556-111 this season – dominated both sides.

"When you have a kicker (David Green) who can put the ball in the end zone and you put a good defense out there on the 20-yard line, the percentages of scoring are good," Rocha said. "You have an opportunistic defense that causes turnovers, forces punts.

"And then you have Jaylen Moore at the 50-yard line returning a punt. So the field position game for the offense all year has been, if you look at the average, inside the opponent's 50 every time it gets the ball. So your percentages of scoring are so high.

"With that said, they work well off each other – great complementary football. I just couldn't be more proud of an offense that scores 47 points a game and a defense that gives up nine points a game."

The Blues (7-3-1), the three-time defending champions, scored on a short run in the second and a short pass in the fourth.

Rhyne Russell had 11 tackles to lead the Cougars' defense. Cam Norton added 10 tackles – one for a loss – while Micah Russell had nine tackles – three for a loss, including two sacks. James Singletary had two sacks, plus a third-quarter safety, and Henry Matthews made an interception.
