Texas A&M football's 2026 opponents ranked before the season opener

College football is back in Aggieland, and it’s finally game week for the 2026 Texas A&M football team. After an offseason filled with roster turnover, a beefed‑up SEC schedule, and eligibility lawsuits, it’s good to get back to business and let a bunch of young adults throwing a ball around rule our Saturdays again.
For the Aggies, they’re looking to build on one of their better seasons in decades after making the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history. While the year ended on a two‑game losing streak, the standard has been set, and the goal for this season is a little different. It’s about proving they can avoid the drop‑off this program has shown time after time whenever success finally arrives.
It all starts with the schedule, and the truth is no one really knows how these teams will show up once the lights are bright and the pressure is on. There has never been a preseason Top 25 ranking that ends up 100% correct by the end of the season, and I don’t expect our rankings below to be perfect six weeks from now either. However, we have to start somewhere.
With the 2026 football season getting ready to kick off, here’s a ranking of Texas A&M’s opponents from easiest to most challenging, based on preseason rankings:
12. Texas A&M vs. Citadel – Week 7
2026 record: 0-1
Analysis: To put it plainly, they’re a Southern Conference team that has managed only nine wins over the last three years, and they will not be able to keep up with the Aggies.
11. Texas A&M vs. Missouri State – Week 1
2026 record: 0-0
Analysis: Missouri State will put up more of a fight than Citadel, but not by much, even with a first‑year head coach at the helm. Still, they did reach a bowl game in their first season in Conference USA, finishing with a 7–6 record.
10. Texas A&M vs. Arizona State – Week 2
2026record: 0-0
Analysis: A&M will face their first real test of the season early in this Week Two matchup. It will be a good opportunity to see where the team is at. The Sun Devils took a step back in 2025 after making the CFP, finishing 8–5 and losing to Duke in the Sun Bowl. While they are not ranked now, they are a sleeper team to watch out for.
9. Texas A&M vs. Kentucky – Week 3
2026 record: 0-0
Analysis: This will be their first SEC game of the season, and the Wildcats are an interesting team that is pretty hard‑nosed but haven’t had a winning conference record since 2021. New head coach Will Stein is tasked with getting them back on track, and to help, he hired former Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman.
8. Texas A&M vs. Arkansas – Week 8
2026 record: 0-0
Analysis: Another new head coach, but a longtime rival that goes back over a century. Overall, it’s been a pretty even series, but the Aggies have an overwhelming advantage in the recent history. Still, will moving the game away from Jerry’s World swing the momentum in the future?
7. Texas A&M @ South Carolina – Week 10
2026 record: 0-0
Analysis: Texas A&M needed a historic comeback to beat the Gamecocks last season, a win that launched Marcel Reed into the Heisman talks. This is always a tough road game, and this year will be no different.
6. Texas A&M @ Missouri – Week 6
2026 record: 0-0
Analysis: Missouri is one of those teams that feels like they are one or two strong recruiting classes away from being a consistent double‑digit win program, and they’ve been to six straight bowl games with a 29–9 record over the last three seasons. I don’t believe in trap games, but the Aggies need to be sure they are on point when they head to Memorial Stadium.
5. Texas A&M vs. Tennessee – Week 11
2026 record: 0-0
Analysis: Very similar to Missouri, another tough team that has had a lot of recent success with three top‑25 finishes in the past five seasons and a CFP appearance in 2024. Head coach Josh Heupel did a good job turning around the Volunteers, coaching them to double‑digit wins for the first time since 2007.
4. Texas A&M @ Alabama – Week 8
2026 record: 0-0
Analysis: This isn’t Nick Saban’s Alabama, but they are still a top‑tier program and well‑coached. They went 7–1 in the conference and made it to the quarterfinal of the CFP before losing to the eventual champion Indiana Hoosiers. It’s tough to follow a college football legend and compete for players in the NIL era. A 20–8 record with two top‑25 finishes and a playoff win is a good start for a first‑time SEC head coach.
3. Texas A&M @ LSU – Week 4
2026 record: 0-0
Analysis: This has turned into one of the best A&M rivals over the last decade across all sports and note that college football super villain Lane Kiffin as the head coach it will must see tv. Also, no matter what you think of the coach he always has a competitive team, and he now has a recruiting juggernaut that's even attracting NFL players.
2. Texas A&M @ Oklahoma – Week 12
2025 final record: 0-0
Analysis: Oklahoma is one of those teams that can go 10–2 or 5–5, but they have something in starting quarterback John Mateer, and when he is healthy and playing at his best, they are one of the best teams in the SEC. At the same time, while they are ranked No. 2 right now, by halfway through the season they could drop several spots. But as of today, they are a tough out for the Aggies.
1. Texas A&M vs. Texas – Week 13
2026 record: 0-0
Analysis: Until the Aggies beat the Longhorns, they will always be the toughest team to beat. It doesn’t matter if they are a preseason No. 1 or No. 101. They will not move from this spot this season unless something dramatic happens with their roster.
