There’s nothing like watching a blue-chip running back prospect dominate his competition at the high school level. Absurd stat lines, eye-popping highlights and a heap of hype often build for some of the best in the nation during their senior seasons.

The high school football season is back and there’s a wave of elite burners in the 2027 cycle. In total, there are 21 RB prospects in the updated Rivals300 rankings. Seven of those 21 are top-100 overall recruits and two are consensus five-stars throughout the recruiting industry.

All 21 of those RBs are already committed and a majority are headed for the SEC. Ten different teams in the conference have landed at least one blue-chipper at the position. The Big Ten has four, while the ACC, Big 12 and Notre Dame account for the rest.

Rivals takes a look at the top 10 running back prospects in the 2027 Rivals300 entering September, along with how well they’ve played early on in their senior seasons now that most have a game or two under their belt.

1. Kemon Spell — Georgia

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 10 NATL.
School: McKeesport (Pa.)
Committed Since: Feb. 2

It was quite the season-opener for Spell, who needed just four carries to stack 73 yards and three touchdowns. McKeesport cruised to a 55-0 victory and will lean on its bell cow as the year moves forward. Spell can beat you with brute force and elite speed. Over the last two seasons, he’s had over 3,000 rushing yards and 52 touchdowns.

2. David Gabriel Georges — Tennessee

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 22 NATL.
School: Baylor School (Tenn.)
Committed Since: July 22

Baylor School is 2-0 and Gabriel Georges stole the show in game one, a 38-20 win over Brentwood Academy. The 5-foot-11, 220-pounder rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns to go with 78 receiving yards, going viral on social media in the process. He had 70 yards and a score in a 37-12 win vs. Loudoun Sports Academy (Va.) last week. The Red Raiders are the No. 15 team in the nation and No. 1 team in Tennessee, per the Rivals Composite Rankings.

3. Landen Williams-Callis — Texas

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 42 NATL.
School: Randle (Texas)
Committed Since: Aug. 1

Williams-Callis, the 2025 Gatorade Texas Football Player of the Year and National Player of the Year finalist, got right back to business in a state title rematch vs. South Oak Cliff. Randle pulled out a 20-14 win and ‘LWC’ led the charge with 227 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries. That gives him an incredible 127 rushing scores in his high school career.

4. SaRod Baker — Texas Tech

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 72 NATL.
School: DeSoto (Texas)
Committed Since: April 27

DeSoto was rolled 38-14 in a national showcase game at St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) on Saturday. The Eagles were down 38-0 and the entire offense was shut down for almost the entire night. Baker did have 81 rushing yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, as well as two receptions. DeSoto’s schedule isn’t getting any easier over the next few weeks, so Baker will continue to get chances to prove himself on big stages.

5. Keldrid Ben — Oklahoma

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 86 NATL.
School: Montgomery (Texas)
Committed Since: Dec. 1, 2025

Montgomery went on the road and eeked out a 23-20 victory vs. New Caney to begin the year 1-0. Ben was the work horse for the Bears, turning 19 carries into 164 yards and a touchdown. The 5-foot-10, 210-pounder is coming off a junior year that saw him average over 10 yards per carry, finishing with 1,560 yards and 15 scores on the ground.

6. Nigel Newkirk — Alabama

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 89 NATL.
School: Gainesville (Ga.)
Committed Since: May 31

Newkirk tore his ACL in Gainesville’s state semifinal game last season, ending a breakout year that saw him rush for nearly 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. He’s been recovering since and told Rivals’ Chad Simmons last week that he’s targeting the middle of October for his senior season debut. Gainesville is the No. 11 team in Georgia, per the Rivals Composite Rankings.

7. Myson Johnson-Cook — Auburn

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 95 NATL.
School: East St. Louis (Ill.)
Committed Since: April 25

Unfortunately for Johnson-Cook, he broke his collarbone in East St. Louis’ season-opening victory over Mount Carmel (Ill.). He still rushed for 90 yards on 12 carries before suffering the injury, which will keep him out for a majority of his senior year. He finished with 1,341 yards and 20 scores on the ground last fall, averaging over 111 yards per game.

8. Tre Segarra — LSU

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 126 NATL.
School: Byrnes (S.C.)
Committed Since: June 16

Segarra took one of his first carries of the season 53 yards to the house vs. Independence — a game that was called at 7-0 in favor of Byrnes due to inclement weather. The Rebels then lost 35-21 to Dorman on Friday. Segarra had 112 total yards and a touchdown in the defeat. Byrnes, now 1-1, is the No. 10 team in South Carolina, per the Rivals Composite Rankings.

9. Gary Walker — Clemson

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 131 NATL.
School: Creekside (Ga.)
Committed Since: May 20

Creekside fell 29-20 in its season-opener vs. Clay-Chalkville, one of the top teams in Alabama. Walker did his part and then some in the loss, rushing for 119 yards and all three of his team’s touchdowns. That’s right on line for the four-star, considering he averaged 119 yards per game in his 20-TD junior season last fall.

10. Trey Martin — LSU

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 148 NATL.
School: Franklin Parish (La.)
Committed Since: June 17

The Louisiana high school regular season finally gets underway this week and Martin will lead the way for Franklin Parish, the preseason No. 50 team in The Boot, per the Rivals Composite Rankings. As a junior, he rushed for 1,310 yards and 26 touchdowns, while also adding five receiving TDs.
