Clemson names starting quarterback for Week 1 opener against LSU

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has named his starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against LSU.

Christopher Vizzina will start for the Tigers in Baton Rouge. The news was announced by Swinney during a Tuesday press conference.

Vizzina was the favorite to get the gig during the offseason, but he still had to earn it. Freshman Tait Reynolds really battled Vizzina during camp, and Swinney says it’s “likely” he’ll also get some playing time against LSU.

Vizzina has spent the last two seasons as Clemson’s backup quarterback, compiling 596 yards through the air, four touchowns, and one interception. He has paid his dues and will now get an opportunity to show what he can do as the starter.

Season outlook

This is a big year for the Tigers as they try to get back into the ACC and national title conversation. They won only seven games last year, their fewest in a season since 2010.

Swinney is entering his 19th season as the Tigers’ head coach and has compiled a 187-53 record. He has led Clemson to nine ACC titles and two national titles during his reign as head coach.

He’ll try to get the Tigers off on the right foot to start the 2026 season on Saturday night. Kickoff from Baton Rouge will be at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit will be on the call for the contest.
