Sam Leavitt decided to transfer from Arizona State to LSU this offseason, giving him the chance to play for Lane Kiffin. While there has been plenty of off-the-field drama surrounding the program and Kiffin, his new head coach has also praised Leavitt’s work on the field.
Now, the quarterback is giving praise to the coaching staff, per Fox College Football.
“Everyone knows he’s really forward-thinking, but I think the coolest thing about him and just everybody else upstairs is just the camaraderie from the coaching staff perspective,” Leavitt said. “Like, they really do feel like a family. They enjoy spending time with each other, you know, running around on the field, competing and everything, playing pickleball.”

While the staff is new at LSU, many of them have worked with Kiffin before and have a previous bond. Charlie Weis Jr., the offensive coordinator, and much of the offensive staff came from Ole Miss. On the defensive side of the ball, while defensive coordinator Blake Baker has not worked with Kiffin before, some others have, such as Chris Kiffin and Ed Orgeron. The solid relationship on the coaching staff has also trickled down to the players.
“The whole team’s been vibing and playing as a collective group and unit, and that only happens because of the way that everything’s up is upstairs,” Leavitt said. “It goes into all the position rooms, and when we’re sitting in here for unit and team meetings, just the way that coaches are able to call in other coaches, and they understand exactly what they’re going to get out of each other.”
Hopefully for LSU and Leavitt, those vibes turn into success on the field. LSU has a goal of making the College Football Playoff, something they have not since winning a national championship in 2019. Leavitt knows what it takes to get to the playoffs, having helped lead Arizona State there in 2024. The first step is to win the opening game.
LSU is set to face off against Clemson on Saturday, September 5.
