There will be a new corporate logo on the field Saturday when Georgia football kicks off its season against Tennessee State, but the prime real estate of a jersey patch worn by the Bulldogs remains available.
In the first season when schools can strike deals with companies for a jersey patch, Georgia has yet to make one.
“It continues to be a part of a significant revenue opportunity mix,” said Alan Thomas, Georgia’s senior associate athletic director for marketing and revenue strategy. “The investment level and the partner level takes some significant work to do that.”
While Georgia is one of 13 schools that will have Progressive Insurance as their on-field logo this season, Thomas said of jersey patches that the majority of teams in college football this season “may not move into that space.”
Tennessee announced Tueday that its football and Olympic Sports teams will wear a First Horizon Bank logo in a 10-year deal worth more than $120 million, according to Knox News.
Elsewhere in the SEC, Arkansas will wear a Tyson Foods jersey patch for all 19 of its teams, LSU’s patch is Woodside Energy for its 21 teams while Vanderbilt's all-sports jersey patch partner is SRM Concrete.
Other programs with announced jersey patch deals: Ohio State with Chase, Notre Dame with SoFi, Georgia Tech with packaging company Veritiv, Memphis with Fed Ex, Wisconsin with Culver’s and Illinois with Busey Bank.
Ohio State's deal is worth nearly $17 million million annually, per ESPN. Notre Dame's is $18 to $20 million a year over six years, reports Yahoo Sports. Illinois' agreement is for $30 million over five years, according to Front Office Sports.
“It’s important to us, it’s on the radar,” Thomas said. “Trust me, we have conversations and works towards it daily but when the right deal is there and the right opportunity is there with the right partner then we’ll be prepared to act on it.”
Thomas said the on-field logo deal with Progressive Insurance is a multi-year deal. Financial terms have not been disclosed.
