Kyle Whittingham is entering his first season as the head coach of Michigan football. Michigan enters the season ranked 16th in the AP Top 25.
Now, a poll of college football coaches conducted by The Athletic thinks Michigan may be the biggest sleeper in the nation.
“I could see him with some of those Michigan guys with the Utah culture make them really good, really good fast. They have an identity, and it’s the type of identity that they’ve wanted there,” a coach from the Mountain West told The Athletic.

“I really want to see what Whittingham does at Michigan. They’re so creative in the run game. I wouldn’t be shocked if you blinked and they’re 10-2,” a coach from the American Conference said.
Michigan got three of the 18 votes given out, but no other team got more than two. Other teams that got votes were Oklahoma, BYU, Florida, Alabama, and USC, each receiving two votes. Meanwhile, Arizona, Kansas State, North Dakota State, Penn State, and Washington all received one vote.
For Michigan to surprise, they would need to pull some upsets. Michigan faces six ranked teams this year, with four of them being ranked higher than the Wolverines. In Week 2, the Wolverines are hosting tenth-ranked Oklahoma, while they will also host sixth-ranked Indiana later in the season. They will also host Iowa and Penn State, both teams ranked in the AP Top 25. The final three weeks of the season have two brutal road trips. They will visit second-ranked Oregon and top-ranked Ohio State.
Michigan opens its season on September 5, hosting Western Michigan.
