Kentucky vs Youngstown State: Offensive X Factors

The Kentucky football team is set to host the Youngstown State Penguins on Saturday to kickoff the 2026 season and the Will Stein era in Lexington. We recently previewed Youngstown State's offense and defense, showing what the Wildcats can expect at 1 P.M. ET at Kroger Field.

In this article, we will preview the X factors on the offensive side of the football for both teams. Here are those players and/or position groups that can have impressive performances in week one.

Kentucky Offensive Line

Typically we will list players in this article, but the Kentucky offensive line have received a ton of buzz all offseason. With four transfer additions in left tackle Lance Heard, left guard Tegra Tshabola, center Coleton Price and right guard Olaus Alinen; they will join the returning right tackle Malachi Wood to form a unit up front that could be among the best in the SEC. The offensive staff certainly thinks so, and they get to go out and prove it this week against Youngstown State. The Penguins have a dynamic quarterback that we will talk about later, but the defense lacks playmakers.

All five of Kentucky's offensive lineman weigh over 300 pounds, and all except the center Price stand are 6'5 or taller. This is a group that will be able to physically exploit the Penguins defense and help get the victory for the Wildcats. I would expect them to lean on this offensive line early, opening holes for running back CJ Baxter to run through. They will likely ease Kenny Minchey into the game with the running game and quick game concepts before taking deep shots down the field; if this group lives up to the billing Minchey will stay clean all game.

QB Kenny Minchey

Speaking of Kenny Minchey, everyone is intrigued to see what he looks like in Will Stein's offense given his track record with developing quarterbacks. Minchey could have a big day on Saturday, as the offensive line should give him plenty of time to get through his reads and find open receivers. It will be interesting to see which pass catchers emerge on Saturday, as we have heard good things about multiple wide receivers throughout spring and fall camp. Tight end Willie Rodriguez seems to be the focal point of the passing game and we will get to see that play out in week one.

HB CJ Baxter

CJ Baxter was once a highly coveted running back recruit and had a promising start to his college career as a true freshman at Texas. Injuries have unfortunately derailed that progression, but the talk is he is as close to 100% healthy as he has been in a long time. Running behind that massive offensive line could be a great start for him to get back on that track he was on before the injuries. Baxter will have plenty of opportunities to make plays and showcase his ability on Saturday against the Penguins.

QB Beau Brungard

We spoke on it in our offensive preview of Youngstown State, but quarterback Beau Brungard is far and away the best player on the Penguins football team. A true dual-threat, Brungard is coming off a season in which he threw for over 3,000 yards and rushed for over 1,400 yards. Youngstown State is not afraid to lean on his legs, expect him to get anywhere from 15 to 20 carries on Saturday. This will be a great test for Jay Bateman's young defense and specifically his off ball linebackers; looking ahead to conference play, this is the perfect test for the defense as they will see multiple dual threat type quarterbacks this season in the SEC.
