‘One of the Most Infamous Cold Takes’ — Freezing Cold Takes Digs Up Beano Cook’s Brutal Notre Dame-Ron Powlus Prediction

Way back in the ’90s, former Notre Dame quarterback Ron Powlus entered college football as one of the nation’s top-ranked high school quarterback recruits, prompting former ESPN analyst Beano Cook to famously make a bold prediction about the quarterback’s future with the Fighting Irish.

However, Cook’s ambitious prediction eventually became one of the most memorable misses in college football history, and it resurfaced again as the creator of Freezing Cold Takes put the spotlight on Cook’s bold claim.

Beano Cook’s Bold Ron Powlus Prediction

Powlus was a four-year starting quarterback for the Irish from 1994-97 and served as a two-time captain while establishing 20 school records at Notre Dame.

However, even before Powlus had any meaningful success with Notre Dame, Cook was so convinced of his potential that the former ESPN analyst famously predicted Notre Dame would win at least two national championships with Powlus under center.

He also boldly projected that Powlus would win two Heisman Trophies and ultimately become the greatest quarterback in Notre Dame history.

Unfortunately, Powlus’ career did not unfold as Cook had envisioned, largely because injuries prevented him from reaching those heights.

In the latest episode ofPro Football Network’s Unguarded Access, Cam Mellor sat down with Fred Segal, creator of Freezing Cold Takes, who revisited Cook’s famous prediction and took a shot at the former ESPN analyst’s remarkably confident assessment of Powlus.

“The Ron Powlus Heisman thing, where Beano Cook said that Ron Powlus was going to win the Heisman twice, at least twice as a freshman quarterback in ’93 and Notre Dame was going to win the national championship at least twice, where Ron Powlus was the quarterback, and none of that happened,” Segal said.

“That was one of the most infamous, like cold take type things from college football in the ’90s. Like, if anyone watching ’90s college football remembered that, it kind of followed Cook throughout the rest of his career.”

Powlus started all 44 regular-season games, along with two bowl games, in which he played for Notre Dame and completed 558 of 969 passes for 7,602 yards and 52 touchdowns.

However, Powlus went undrafted in the 1998 NFL Draft, with his injury history in college playing a significant role in limiting his prospects as a professional quarterback. He then joined the Tennessee Oilers as a free agent in 1998 before later spending time on the Detroit Lions’ preseason roster in 1999 and the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster in 2000.

Following his playing career, Powlus transitioned into coaching and athletic administration. He spent five years at Notre Dame, working as the director of personnel development and the Fighting Irish’s quarterbacks coach.

Powlus later served as Notre Dame’s director of player development and most recently was promoted to chief operating officer of the athletic department, a first-of-its-kind role in South Bend.
