How Kentucky starts the season 1-0 against Youngstown State

Kentucky football kicks off the Will Stein era in Kroger Field on Saturday as they host the Youngstown State Penguins at 1 P.M ET. This week, we have previewed Youngstown State's offense and defense, as well as given some X factors for the offense and defense for both teams.
This will be a great litmus test for Kentucky's new defense under defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, as they have to contain the 2025 Walter Payton award winner in Youngstown State quarterback Beau Brungard. On the other side, Kentucky has a chance to showcase an explosive offense under Coach Stein.
In this article, we will lay out how Kentucky gets the win on Saturday and starts the new regime with a 1-0 record. As most football games do, this all starts up front at the line of scrimmage. Kentucky revamped the offensive line in the transfer portal and all offseason we have heard the coaching staff rave about this unit. The Wildcats seems to have revived the "big blue wall" that had been destroyed for the last few seasons.
This is the perfect game to prove that to be the case, because if all the talk is true, this Kentucky offensive line should dominate up front. The Penguins lack playmakers on the defensive side of the football, as they lean on their dynamic quarterback and creative offensive scheme to win football games. The new look offensive line will definitely look good getting off the bus, and though I haven't fact checked to back this statement up–this has to be the largest offensive line in Kentucky football history.
That is where it starts, the Wildcats will lean on the offensive line and the running game to easily gain yards. This is something we saw at times under Mark Stoops, particularly under the late great offensive line coach John Schlarman.
Where this team defers from that is the philosophy that led Stein to his first head coaching job, and that is his quarterback-friendly scheme that creates easy completions that continue to move the football forward. Expect a lot of RPOs and quick game concepts to ease quarterback Kenny Minchey into his first college start.
This offense will be predicated on running the football, perimeter screens, quick game and RPO concepts to consistently move the football on drives. Then, Coach Stein and his staff will have touchdown-to-checkdown plays that are deep passing concepts with potential for creating explosives, but have the added element of check downs to underneath routes. Chasing completions and not forcing the football down the field is something Coach Stein encourages his quarterbacks to do so drives don't stall out.
Combine all of this with eye candy that Coach Stein's offense entails to confuse defenses. The Wildcats have to play clean pre-snap, staying penalty free and lining up correctly to utilize the shifts and motions. They have to execute pre-snap to get the most out of each play after the snap of the ball. This will make life a lot easier on this offense and could lead to a big opening day for Minchey.
Kentucky will win this game on the offensive side of the football. However, it is just as intriguing to see how the new defensive scheme under Jay Bateman will look. They have a tall task at hand with containing quarterback Beau Brungard, who will likely carry the ball 15-20 times and extends plays in the passing game when the play breaks down. With quarterbacks like LaNorris Sellers, John Mateer, Marcel Reed and Sam Leavitt on the schedule, this is a perfect initial test for the Wildcats defense.
They have to make tackles on Brungard in the run game and contain him on broken plays. If the Wildcats successfully do that, this game could be a blowout in a hurry. Brungard is a playmaker, and there will be times in this game that he shows off his playmaking ability.
All in all, the Wildcats have to control the line of scrimmage to win this football game. The offensive line is in position to live up to the offseason hype and put a dominant performance on film week one. The defensive line has a bigger challenge ahead, as they have to play fundamentally sound to make plays and contain Brungard. I believe Kentucky has a breakout performance offensively and make enough plays on the defensive side of the football to win this game in convincing fashion.
