LSU and Lane Kiffin have been involved in controversy, bringing back players who did not make NFL rosters. Kiffin has defended the practice, noting that it is in the best interest of the players and the team for this move to be made. Meanwhile, the SEC has promised punishment for any team fielding former professional players.
Now, the conference is taking another step, filing a lawsuit against LSU and Lane Kiffin, per Pete Nakos of On3.
“Defendants waged a deliberate and coordinated campaign to recruit professional athletes to play football for LSU during the 2026-27 season, including players who had signed NFL contracts with the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” the SEC states in its complaint Thursday.

The lawsuit comes on the same day that a judge in Baton Rouge will have a hearing on a preliminary injunction, which would decided in a temporary restraining order would become permanent until a trial date is set. If the injunction was granted, players such as Zxavian Harris and Dae’Quan Wright would have legal standing to play for LSU.
“In its complaint, the SEC requests the court ‘enter a preliminary and permanent injunction prohibiting Defendants from violating the Conference’s First Amendment rights by compelling the Conference to associate with conduct that is contrary to the Conference’s purpose and mission,'” Nakos posted on X, formerly Twitter.
LSU will have to submit its 105-man roster 24-hours before its opening game. Currently, the players in question are practicing with LSU, but Kiffin has said they will not take the field without the court ruling.
LSU and Clemson are set to kick off their seasons at 7:30 pm ET on Saturday.
