Lane Kiffin’s choice to leave Ole Miss for LSU sparked controversy right from the start. Yet, the drama didn’t end upon his arrival in Baton Rouge. From a sour breakup with Ole Miss to provocative remarks about his old school and an unusual conflict involving ex-NFL players, Kiffin has kept making headlines before coaching his first game for LSU.

Here’s a look at the biggest controversies since Kiffin left Oxford.

November 2025: Kiffin Leaves Ole Miss for LSU

On Nov. 30, Kiffin officially announced his departure from Ole Miss to become LSU’s head coach. The timing quickly drew concern, as Ole Miss was 11-1 and qualified for the College Football Playoff, yet Kiffin was accepting another SEC position.

Kiffin said he expressed his desire to coach the Rebels during the postseason, but athletic director Keith Carter refused his request. Ole Miss elevated defensive coordinator Pete Golding to the head coach position.

December 2025: Ole Miss Players Dispute Kiffin’s Exit Story

The breakup grew even uglier days later when several Ole Miss players publicly disputed Kiffin’s version of events.

Kiffin stated that the players had asked Carter to allow him to stay as their coach for the playoffs. However, linebacker Suntarine Perkins and offensive linemen Brycen Sanders and Paris Wilkins disagreed, asserting that this was not what Kiffin had communicated to the team. Carter added that Kiffin had known for weeks that he would not be coaching in the postseason.

December 2025: Kiffin Takes Staff Members to LSU

Kiffin was also criticized for trying to take members of his Ole Miss coaching staff with him to LSU. Reports suggest he used his offensive assistants as bargaining chips in negotiations about staying with the Rebels for the playoff.

The situation increased tensions within the Ole Miss locker room as players reportedly confronted Kiffin regarding the staff departures.

Several key Ole Miss coaches eventually followed Kiffin to LSU, including offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., RB coach Kevin Smith, strength and conditioning coach Nick Savage and GM Billy Glasscock.

January 2026: Kiffin Poaches Players From Ole Miss Roster

Kiffin didn’t just raid his old coaching staff, he also convinced several players to follow him from Oxford to Baton Rouge.

LB TJ Dottery, DE Princewill Umanmielen and LB Devin Harper all followed Kiffin out the door to Louisiana once the transfer portal opened in January.

While Ole Miss was able to return star QB Trinidad Chambliss and RB Kewan Lacy, Kiffin taking a big chunk of Ole Miss’s coaching staff and several of its players just added fuel to the fire for Rebels fans.

May 2026: Kiffin’s Comments About Ole Miss Spark Backlash

Months later, Kiffin reignited the feud in a Vanity Fair interview. He discussed recruiting challenges at Ole Miss and said some recruits had expressed concerns about attending school in Oxford because of Mississippi’s history of race and segregation.

Kiffin later clarified that his comments were not his personal opinion but rather reports from recruits and parents. Despite this, the remarks caused widespread backlash, and the SEC was reportedly considering a possible reprimand.

August 2026: Kiffin Tries to Bring Former NFL Players to LSU

The recent controversy might be the largest so far, as Kiffin tried to bring former NFL players to college football after their release from professional teams.

Former Ole Miss TE Dae’Quan Wright accepted an offer to join LSU after the Cleveland Browns waived him. Additionally, ex-Ole Miss DL Zxavian Harris also signed with the Tigers. Kiffin supported these decisions despite facing considerable criticism over college players potentially losing roster spots to former professionals.

The controversy grew when the SEC enacted a rule prohibiting athletes with specific professional experience from rejoining college sports. The conference also approved harsh penalties, including possible half-season suspensions for coaches and fines of up to 50% of a program’s annual budget. LSU chose not to vote, which heightened the view that the rule was targeting Kiffin’s approach.

The issue is still ongoing with LSU’s season opener on Saturday.

September 2026: Book Except Bombshell

A recent Vanity Fair excerpt from John Talty’s upcoming Lane Kiffin biography has reignited interest in Kiffin’s contentious time at Alabama.

A former Alabama coach revealed that Nick Saban was worried about Kiffin’s dealings with college-aged women and allegedly instructed staff to “keep Lane away from the girls that are in college,” specifically mentioning sorority girls.

The information quickly spread online, further complicating Kiffin’s already controversial image as he prepares for his debut season at LSU.

Despite the controversy surrounding Lane Kiffin’s departure from Ole Miss and his initial months at LSU, one fact remains: Kiffin has not yet coached a single game in Baton Rouge.

From his tumultuous exit to his controversial remarks, the involvement of former NFL players, and resurfaced stories from his past, Kiffin has already generated enough headlines to fill an entire season.

The only remaining question is whether the on-field performance at LSU will match the intensity of the off-field drama.
