Week One College Football TV/Streaming Schedule

Okay, that was a nice warmup. While week zero didn’t include any momentous interconference battles, nor even a whisper of SEC action, there was some solidly compelling football played by schools across the spectrum.

But now, as they say, it gets real. Week one of the college football season is upon us, and it’s a supersized three day holiday weekend, which means even more action. The full, unadulterated, unabridged schedule is below. Here however are the highlights that I think deserve your attention.

Thursday Night: Deion returns to Atlanta

Colorado visits Georgia Tech tonight at 8:00 pm on ESPN in a game that promises to tell us a little about two teams that we really don’t know anything about. The Buffalos as usual are an entirely different team than the one that Primetime skippered last year.

But Brent Key’s Yellow Jackets aren’t much less of a mystery. Gone is offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner (now at Florida), replaced by former Tech QB George Godsey. Jackets signal caller/heedless battering ram Haynes King is also gone, replaced by Indiana transfer Alberto Mendoza, last seen backing up his brother Fernando Mendoza in the Hoosiers’ improbable national title run. He’ll be joined in the backfield by tailback Justice Haynes. Haynes, the son of Bulldog great Verron Haynes, spent 2025 at Michigan after transferring from Alabama, but missed most of the second half of the season with a foot injury. I expect him to have a good night against the Boulder boys, given Coach Sanders’ teams’ log history of slap dash defense.

Friday Night: A Hurricane warning in Palo Alto, and Trojan fans avoiding a nasty moon burn.

Friday night brings some halfway decent Power 4 football, as the #7 ranked Miami Hurricanes travel to Stanford for 9:00 pm eastern start on ESPN. The Cardinal are unlikely to put up a major fight here, but it will be our first chance to see what Mario Cristobal’s offense looks like sans Carson Beck and with Duke transfer Darien Mensah at the helm.

Also at 6:00 on the west coast the Fresno State Bulldogs travel to the Coliseum to take on the Southern Cal Trojans. The biggest news from USC’s opening weekend win over San Jose State was of course how few people saw it. Trojan fans were quick to defend themselves by pointing out it was an early start for a cupcake opponent, conveniently forgetting that same setup will this weekend result in a host of sellout crowds across the SEC and rest of the Big Ten. This weekend result they won’t have that same excuse, as PAC-12 newcomer Fresno State under Matt Entzs comes to call. Maybe Trojan fans will answer the call and show up in droves. But also maybe they’ll be waiting for a table at that new Wyoming -style sushi place opening up in Burbank.

Saturday early: Heavyweights and light work.

In the noon hour you’ll have your pick of top ten teams opening up against less heralded opponents. In the twelve team playoff era this is the new normal, in place of the big made-for-TV matchups like Georgia/Oregon and Michigan/Texas that had become a welcome part of week one. So take your pick of watching g#1 Ohio State walk over Ball State, or Alabama getting overly excited about a win over East Carolina. But if you want to watch a competitive football game, Miami of Ohio traveling to Pitt should be worthwhile. Plus the Redhawks are actually a trendy pick for a G5 playoff spot out of the MAC. Might be worth looking in on them early.

Saturday midday: You better be glued to ESPN+ watching the Georgia Bulldogs make tiger pate out of the visitors from Nashville.

Saturday Evening: Dabo and the Bandit.

Every story needs a villain. And for awhile there Dabo Swinney was that guy for a lot of college football fans. Move over, Dabo. There’s a new Snidely Whiplash in town. And by town, I mean Baton Rouge.

Clemson and LSU will square off T 7:30 Saturday evening in a matchup of teams led by coaches who opposing fanbases rate somewhere between homily annoying and evil incarnate. One way or the other somebody is giving an uncomfortable postgame presser. America wins.

Sunday: Widespread Pete finds out if life at the top really is grand.

You could take in Notre Dame/Wisconsin, but I sort of suspect that one will get out of hand by halftime, and in the meantime you’ll have to endure Notre Dame’s external PR department (read: the NBC broadcast team) salivating over the principled moral stand the Irish took last season by taking their widdle ball and going home instead of to a non-playoff bowl game. Hard pass for me.

Instead I’ll be getting a look at Pete Golding’s #9 ranked Ole Miss Rebels taking on the #24 Louisville Cardinals live from Nashville. It’ll be a more competitive contest, I’ll get to scout a team Georgia actually sees in 2026, and no one has any delusions of moral grandeur.

Monday: There can be only one (game, apparently).

If you’re watching college football on Labor Day Night you’ll be watching Florida State take on SMU in a matchup of a team made about being recently spurned by the playoff committee and another that might have been better off if they had been spurned.
