The UMass Minutemen (0-0) travel to SHI Stadium on Thursday night to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-0) as both teams kick off their 2026 college football seasons with a Week 1 matchup.

UMass opens the 2026 season after an abysmal 2025 in which they went 0-12, their first back in the MAC since the 2015 season. The Minutemen averaged 247.5 yards and 11.1 points per game in 2025 and ended the season with a 45-14 loss to Bowling Green. Tight end Reece Adkins, who is back on the 2026 roster, caught a 20-yard touchdown in that game for his first career score. Linebacker Tyler Martin also returns after recording 10 tackles in the finale, his second straight game with at least 10.
Rutgers finished 5-7 overall and 2-7 in Big Ten play last season, in what was head coach Greg Schiano’s sixth season. The Scarlet Knights closed 2025 with a 40-36 loss to Penn State despite gaining 514 total yards. Running back Antwan Raymond returns after rushing 29 times for 189 yards and a touchdown in that game while adding 62 receiving yards and another score. Wide receiver KJ Duff is also back after catching six passes for 127 yards against Penn State and finishing the season with more than 1,000 receiving yards.
