The long wait is finally over.

The Alabama Crimson Tide will open the 2026 season Saturday when East Carolina comes to Tuscaloosa for the first game of the Kalen DeBoer era’s third season. Alabama enters the matchup as a heavy favorite, but the season opener will provide the Crimson Tide with its first opportunity to show how much the team has improved since last season.

Alabama is ranked No. 13 entering the season and will be looking to start 2026 on a much better note after losing its season opener to Florida State in 2025. The Crimson Tide will also be breaking in sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell as its new starter.

With that in mind, here are three bold predictions for Alabama vs. East Carolina.

1. Daniel Hill Scores a Rushing and Receiving Touchdown

Daniel Hill could be one of the most important players for Alabama in Week 1.

The junior running back is projected to start in the Crimson Tide’s backfield and enters the season with plenty of experience. Hill rushed for 284 yards and six touchdowns on 75 carries last season while also catching 28 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown.

That versatility makes Hill an intriguing player to watch against East Carolina.

Alabama has spent the offseason emphasizing the importance of improving its rushing attack after averaging just 104.1 rushing yards per game in 2025.

Hill should have an opportunity to establish himself early, particularly with Alabama breaking in a new starting quarterback.

The bold prediction: Hill scores two touchdowns — one on the ground and one through the air.

The rushing touchdown is the easier prediction to make, but don’t overlook his receiving ability. Hill has already shown that he can be a factor in the passing game, and Alabama could use him as a safety valve for Russell or get him matched up against a linebacker.

If Alabama gets into the red zone consistently, Hill could have several opportunities to find the end zone.

2. Alabama’s Defense Forces at Least Two Turnovers

There are plenty of questions surrounding Alabama’s offense entering the season, but the defense could be the unit that sets the tone against East Carolina.

The Crimson Tide returns significant defensive talent and has continuity on the coaching staff. That experience could be particularly important in the season opener.

East Carolina is not a team Alabama can afford to completely overlook. The Pirates have been competitive in recent seasons and enter Tuscaloosa looking to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the opening weekend.

Still, Alabama should have a significant talent advantage.

That could create opportunities for the Crimson Tide’s defensive front and secondary to make plays.

The bold prediction: Alabama forces at least two turnovers.

That could come in the form of interceptions, fumbles, or one of each.

Red Morgan is one player to watch closely. As Alabama’s Husky, Morgan could be moved around the formation and given opportunities to attack the line of scrimmage or create confusion for the Pirates’ offense.

If Alabama’s defense can get pressure on East Carolina’s quarterback and force the Pirates into obvious passing situations, the turnovers could come quickly.

And if the Crimson Tide builds an early lead, East Carolina could be forced into taking even more chances.

Two turnovers would be a strong opening statement for a defense that has plenty of expectations entering 2026.

3. An Alabama Kicker Makes a 50-Plus-Yard Field Goal

This might be the boldest prediction of the three.

Alabama’s kicking game could be an important storyline throughout the season, and Week 1 provides an opportunity to see what the Crimson Tide’s specialists, Conor Talty and Lorcan Quinn, can do when the games finally count.

The bold prediction: An Alabama kicker connects on a field goal of at least 50 yards against East Carolina.

There are a couple of ways this one could happen.

Alabama could stall outside the red zone, giving the kicking team a chance to put points on the board from long distance. Or, if the Crimson Tide builds a comfortable lead, Kalen DeBoer could have an opportunity to give his kicker a confidence-building attempt from deep.

A 50-plus-yard make would be a nice early-season confidence boost and could become an important weapon as Alabama moves into SEC play.

It would also be a fun way to start the season for a team that will need to find consistency in every phase of the game.

The Bottom Line

Alabama should be expected to win Saturday, but the season opener is about more than simply getting a victory.

It’s about finding out what this team can do when the lights come on.

For me, that means watching three things closely against East Carolina: Daniel Hill’s impact in the running and passing games, whether Alabama’s defense can create turnovers, and whether the kicking game can produce from long distance.

If all three predictions come true, Alabama could be in for a very comfortable afternoon in Tuscaloosa.

And if Hill scores twice, the defense forces multiple turnovers, and an Alabama kicker drills a 50-yarder, the Crimson Tide may be making a statement from the opening weekend of the 2026 season.
