SOUTH BEND—Notre Dame football put a 70-7 whipping on unranked Syracuse, but the Irish stayed put in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll.
Still ranked ninth after a weekend with little attrition in the top 15, Notre Dame remains wedged between a pair of two-loss teams, No. 8 Oklahoma and No. 10 Alabama, in both the coaches’ and media polls.
Now 9-2 after their ninth straight win, the Irish close out the regular season Saturday, Nov. 29 at Stanford (4-7). The Cardinal is coming off a 31-10 home win over archrival California.
USC, which lost on the road at Oregon, dropped four spots to No. 20 in the coaches’ poll. The Trojans (8-3) were 10-point losers at Notre Dame a month ago.
Pittsburgh, Notre Dame’s only other ranked win, returned to No. 24 in the coaches’ poll after a road upset of No. 12 Georgia Tech. Navy, a blowout loser at Notre Dame on Nov. 8, is listed second among others receiving votes by the coaches.
Texas A&M (11-0) stayed at No. 3 while Miami (9-2) moved up two spots to No. 13 despite needing a last-second score to push the winning margin to 17 at Virginia Tech (3-8). The Aggies and Hurricanes were responsible for Notre Dame’s 0-2 start.
The fourth weekly ranking of the College Football Playoff selection committee is scheduled for Tuesday evening. Notre Dame ranked ninth in last week’s CFP poll and projected to face Oklahoma on the road in a first-round playoff game either Dec. 19 or Dec. 20.
