The coaching carousel is in full swing in college football, and once again, Oregon Duck fans are hearing of one of their coaches being mentioned as a potential candidate for an open job.

This time, it's not Dan Lanning, though. Instead, defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi has been named as one of the top candidates to take over with the California Golden Bears, who parted ways with long-time coach Justin Wilcox on Sunday.

Lupoi, who played at California and started his coaching career there, has been at Oregon since Dan Lanning took over in 2021, and coached one of the best defenses in the nation, particularly over the past two years in Eugene.

"One of the top recruiters on the West Coast, Tosh Lupoi is a former Cal defensive lineman who got his coaching start as an assistant with the Golden Bears," On3 writes. "Lupoi left his alma mater for Washington for a long stretch at Alabama with Nick Saban. He dipped into the NFL for three years before joining Dan Lanning at Oregon. Since arriving in Eugene with the Ducks, he’s helped Lanning establish a program that won the Big Ten last year and earned a CFP bid. He’s a prime candidate for the job, sources told On3."

Oregon's offensive coordinator Will Stein has also been mentioned as a candidate for this job, though he may not be as high on the list because of his lack of history with the program. However, Stein is still one of the top young offensive minds in the game right now, and among the top recruiters in the nation.

"Stein has succeeded with Bo Nix at quarterback. He’s succeeded with Dillon Gabriel at QB. And to this point, he’s been successful with Dante Moore. Stein is a Louisville native and former Cardinal quarterback, but he’s also worked in the high school and college ranks at Texas and has spent the past two years succeeding on the West Coast."

Whether or not either coordinator strongly considers the job is yet to be seen, but it wouldnt be a surprise to see one of, if not both end up leaving Eugene this offseason to take of their own respective programs. Regardless of whether or not they leave, both will likely stay with the Ducks through the stretch run of the playoffs and continue to compete for a national championship.
