When two unreliable teams collide, making a firm prediction can be hazardous to one’s health. Diehard Michigan football fan and Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy opted to place all his faith in Rutgers ahead of the team’s season opener versus UMass on Thursday night. And he paid dearly for it.

While the Scarlet Knights certainly have their flaws, they got to host a program that did not win a single game last season. Portnoy and the odds makers expected a lopsided affair in Piscataway, New Jersey. And that is exactly what happened. The Minutemen silenced the home crowd with a 37-21 victory that was not nearly as close as the scoreboard indicated. A postgame fireworks display, which was obviously pre-planned, made the evening even more unbearable for all those who supported Rutgers.

Portnoy could not fathom this outcome. Just look at what he posted hours earlier. “I made my 1st bet of college football season and it may be my strongest play of the year,” El Presidente declared on X. “Rutgers -29.5 to beat umass by 40 plus.” The Minutemen held a 31-7 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining on the clock.

The miserable showing is drawing head coach Greg Schiano endless condemnation, as people once again question the Scarlet Knights’ validity as a Power Four squad. Portnoy took the criticism a step farther.

“Not only do I think Rutgers football should be kicked out of the Big 10, I think the football program should be disbanded,” he opined.

Rutgers quarterback Dylan Lonergan committed four turnovers, the squad rushed for a measly 1.2 yards per carry and the defense surrendered 200 yards on the ground. Week 1 matchups can be misleading, but the Scarlet Knights did not belong on the same field as the Minutemen. Let that reality sink in.

Publicly endorsing such a team is a stench that will be extremely difficult to wash off. Dave Portnoy took accountability for his catastrophic prognostication, while also lambasting Greg Schiano and Rutgers in an NSFW video.

“I’m not going to point the finger at Schiano, I’m not going to point the finger at Rutgers football, which is the most embarrassing group of losers I’ve ever seen. I’m gonna point the finger at me, and say, ‘hey Dave, you’re a f*****g moron and you got to be better,'” he said. “The buck stops with me. That was the worst pick. I’m sick to my stomach.”

The Massachusetts native can probably withstand a blow to the bank account given his net worth, but hopefully other people did not follow him onto this haywire bandwagon. Rutgers and Dave Portnoy desperately need a bounce-back performance in Week 2.
