Texas A&M unveils statue honoring R.C. Slocum

The Texas A&M Aggies will open the 2026 season against the Missouri State Bears on Saturday at Kyle Field, and they unveiled a statue of former head coach R.C. Slocum on Friday ahead of the game.

Slocum served as the head coach from 1989-2002, compiling a record of 123-47-2 to become the winningest coach in program history. The statue stands outside the north end of Kyle Field beside the All-American Towers and is 10 feet tall.

Current head coach Mike Elko discussed the statue earlier this week, mentioning how he excited he was for it and what Slocum means to the Aggies.

"To me, I view him as a legend," he said. "That's how I've always seen him. I appreciate what he means to this community. I appreciate what he means to this football program," Elko said. "I have a ton of respect and admiration for who he is, and I want to make sure he knows he's always welcomed around. This is his home. … He means so much to this university."

Slocum is by far the most successful head coach in Texas A&M history, leading them to three straight Southwest Conference championships from 1991 to 1993 and a Big 12 title in 2998. He was named the SWC Coach of the Year three times and inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame.

He continued to help Texas A&M even after he stopped coaching, serving as special adviser to Texas A&M's president. He also served as Texas A&M's interim athletic director in 2019 and 2024.
