LSU football is set to open the 2026 season against Clemson in Baton Rouge on Saturday. The Week One matchup will reveal a lot about how prepared the Tigers are despite much drama circulating the program. Despite the talent level on the roster, some are not buying into the hype.

In an article from Bruce Feldman and The Athletic that surveyed 18 coaches at all levels of the FBS, LSU got the most votes for the question, "Which team do you think is the biggest fraud and is getting overhyped?" Seven of the voters picked the Tigers with the next closest being USC, which got four votes.

One Mountain West head coach said the headlines surrounding LSU will "end up being too much of a distraction." An SEC defensive coordinator voiced the following concerns about the team camaraderie and ability to navigate an SEC slate stacked with national championship hopefuls.

"I think it’ll be hard for them to build team chemistry. I could see them imploding.”

LSU signed the top transfer portal class in the country and inked highly touted true freshmen from the 2026 cycle. The team has a lot of moving part, which critics are focusing on ahead of Kiffin's first season leading the Tigers.
