While the Georgia Tech football team suffered a brutal loss to the Colorado Buffaloes on Thursday, 14-13, it did feature the coaching debut of former wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. As Hopkins joined the Georgia Tech football program as an assistant wide receivers coach, announced on July 31, an interesting tidbit from the opening loss could signal a future for the former star.
With the Yellow Jackets and Buffaloes game broadcast on ESPN, sideline reporter Paul Carcaterra would relay what Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key said about Hopkins and his coaching so far. Key went as far as to say that Hopkins is a “rising star” and that “he has all of the attributes to be a head coach,” via The Houston Chronicle.
“He said that DeAndre’s a rising star in the coaching profession,” Carcaterra said on the broadcast. “He’s an unbelievable wide receivers coach, but he has all of the attributes to be a head coach. It’s his demeanor, it’s his relationship with the players. His overall IQ for the game, he said, is off the charts.”

It appears that Hopkins, a 13-year NFL veteran, has already made an impression, as Key said originally when the team first announced his hire that he’s “one of the greatest receivers of all-time.”
“But his value to our program goes far beyond that,” Key said, via the team’s website. “He has an exceptional knowledge of what we’re doing on offense due his long relationship with George Godsey and strong familiarity with the ACC, but most importantly, he’s a leader of men that I’m very excited for our players to be around, on and off the field.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen how Hopkins’ coaching career progresses as the Yellow Jackets’ next game comes on Saturday, Sept. 12 against Tennessee.
