Miami WR Malachi Toney joins Eagles' WR DeVonta Smith in elite company

Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney delivered one of the most dominant halves by a college football receiver in recent memory Friday against Stanford.

Toney caught 10 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, averaging 18.2 yards per reception and producing a game-long catch of 48 yards. The performance placed the Hurricanes star alongside Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith and New York Giants standout Malik Nabers in an exclusive group of recent standout performers.

Smith and Nabers are among the college receivers to record at least 10 catches, 180 receiving yards, and two touchdowns in the first half of a game.

Smith produced one of the greatest championship performances in college football history during Alabama’s victory over Ohio State in January 2021. The eventual Heisman Trophy winner caught 12 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns before halftime of the College Football Playoff national championship game. Smith left with a hand injury early in the third quarter but had already helped Alabama build a 35-17 advantage.

Nabers joined that group while starring for LSU against Mississippi State in 2023. He finished the first half with 188 receiving yards and two touchdowns before closing the afternoon with 13 catches for 239 yards in a dominant Tigers victory.

Toney’s performance offered another reminder of why he is considered one of college football’s most dynamic playmakers. He consistently created separation, generated yards after the catch, and gave Stanford’s secondary no answers.

Joining a list featuring Smith and Nabers is elite company. Toney earned his place before Friday’s game had even reached halftime.
