Tennessee football all-time results on September 5

Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891. Throughout its history, the Vols have played on Sept. 5 eight times and have a 7-1-record.

Tennessee last played on Sept. 5 in 1981, losing to Georgia, 44-0.

Tennessee opened its 1998 season on Sept. 5 and defeated Syracuse, 34-33, at Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York.

Jeff Hall converted a field goal on the final play of the game.

Tee Martin completed 9-of-26 passing attempts for 143 yards and two touchdowns. He also totaled 81 rushing yards and one touchdown on nine attempts.

Jamal Lewis was Tennessee's leading rusher. He recorded 141 yards and two touchdowns on 20 rushing attempts. Peerless Price led Tennessee in receiving yards (97). He totaled five receptions and two receiving touchdowns.

Tennessee finished its 1998 season with a 13-0 record and won the BCS national championship. The Vols also won the SEC championship.
