Week 0 may be one of the silliest terms there is – my guys and gals, it’s Week 1 – but we all wish we were playing in it last weekend, didn’t we?

It wasn’t just fans; players and coaches were ready to go as well.

Said Coach Holgorsen, “You know, I’ve been on this week zero thing for a long, long time. I don’t understand why you don’t play on week zero.”

But it sounds like we’ll be there next year, so there’s that.

Coach Rhule Loves Him Some Baker Mayfield

Earlier in the fall, I asked Anthony Colandrea if he had any QB’s he tried to model himself after and along with Johnny Manziel, he said Baker Mayfield. (He also mentioned Matthew Stafford citing his accuracy.)

Well, Matt Rhule has great admiration for him as well having coached him with the Carolina Panthers after he was brought in when Sam Darnold was injured. As Rhule related, Baker could have stayed where was for much more money as a backup, but he agreed to take a pay cut, because he wanted the opportunity to show what he could do.

Trials with the Panthers, then the Rams, ended up landing him his Tampa Bay gig where he has been the man for three seasons and is entering a 4th. Rhule spoke of how Baker always plays with a chip on his shoulder in a good way and how competitive he is and a great guy, etc.

But the story which really stuck with me was what he did after Rhule was fired.

“I went from coaching an NFL team to dropping the kids off in the school line, and my wife walks in to get something to eat (at a local sandwich shop the team frequented), and people kind of know who she is, and they walk in and (knowing Rhule was fired) start kind of pointing and whispering. Baker walks at the same sandwich shop, (sees Matt’s wife) and walks to the front line, and hugs Julie. Like he’s just a family dude, right?”

I’ve always enjoyed Baker Mayfield, but that moved him up a notch in my world.

Game Day Vibes

  • Yeah. It’s gonna be warm.
  • Hopefully, we get enough heat on their QB’s, we’ll see two or three of them.
