Paul Finebaum warns of dire consequences if LSU, ‘child’ Lane Kiffin continue drama

Paul Finebaum has sharply criticized the ongoing dispute between Lane Kiffin, LSU and the SEC, warning that the fallout could become severe. Speaking on ESPN’s College Football broadcast, Finebaum praised commissioner Greg Sankey for handling what he called a major crisis.
“In a week of utter chaos, there was one hero, and he is Greg Sankey,” Finebaum said. He credited Sankey and the SEC presidents with protecting the conference’s standing during an unusual eligibility fight.
“What he did, with the backing of 15 other presidents, helped preserve the integrity of a great league,” Finebaum added. He argued the situation had pushed college football toward “absolute chaos and moral decay.”

The dispute centers on LSU’s attempt to roster former NFL players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris after legal action opened a path for their return. The SEC challenged that move, creating a rare confrontation between the conference and one of its members.
Finebaum did not spare Kiffin, despite acknowledging the coach’s popularity and ability. “We can all wrap our arms around Lane Kiffin and say he’s lovable and he’s a great coach,” he said.
“But in the end, he’s a child,” Finebaum continued. “He’s a 51-year-old man behaving like a 16-year-old.”
LSU faces bigger consequences
Finebaum’s strongest criticism targeted LSU’s leadership structure rather than Kiffin alone. “The worst part, there are no adults in the room,” he said.
He then mentioned, “I thought all college campuses have an athletic director. The one at LSU has been nowhere to be found. The president, Wade Rousse, has been nowhere to be found.”
“The governor is calling all the shots, and I wonder if there’s any supervision,” Finebaum said. His concern reflects a larger issue facing LSU, because coaching decisions become harder to manage when institutional leadership appears missing.

NFL-style roster management depends on clear authority and defined rules. LSU’s situation instead created uncertainty around eligibility and recruiting players.
Finebaum believes the damage could reach beyond one roster decision. “What happened down there has left a stain on this league,” he said.
He even suggested SEC presidents might consider removing LSU. “They very well might vote to kick LSU out of the league,” Finebaum said, though he acknowledged that outcome remains unlikely.
