Iowa comes off a 9-4 campaign and a win over Vanderbilt in the ReliaQuest Bowl but lost quarterback Mark Gronowski, with Jeremy Hecklinski and Hank Brown listed as co-No. 1s on the initial two-deep depth chart for this week. Returning running back Kamari Moulton led the team with 878 yards while L.J. Phillips transferred from South Dakota after leading the FCS with 1,921 yards while scoring 21 touchdowns. The defense is led by safety Zach Lutmer, who posted 71 tackles and three interceptions in 2025.
Northern Illinois left the Mid-American Conference for the Mountain West in the offseason after going 3-9 in 2025. Its quarterback situation also remains hazy, though Western Carolina transfer Taron Dickens put up eye-popping numbers last season with 3,508 yards and 38 touchdowns with only two interceptions while completing an FCS-best 74.2% of his throws. Dickens transferred to North Carolina, only to change his mind and end up with the Huskies in July. Holdovers Brady Davidson and Jalen Macon remain in the competition for the job.
The Hawkeyes are 9-1 all-time against the Huskies, winning the last time the teams played in 2018.
